Drawing by Jill Hooper
One swift and true line marks the boundary of your face.
Looking inwards, into your own unknowable thoughts. Grey eyes, shaded in mystery. Stare silently.
I sense you, feel the brush of your soft skin on rough rag paper. Each stroke saved.
To see you there, still, stops my breath with your bare beauty.
What skill sharpened wand fixed your features so quietly on the page?
What magic makes marks like these?

Drawing the male torso
I smell ancient fires and funeral pyres in the simmering, sooty ink, burnt bone and grinding stone.
Nibbed reed cleft draws up warm blackness.
Out of the dark comes life, fixed in feathered strokes.
They say we are made of mud.
With pinced fingers you delicately dig out the rusty line,
gently lift the muscles in sienna strokes of warm skin,
marking up a man made immortal on the coffee stained sheet.
Render flesh with ferrous tint of clay made from colliding stars.
